Meet the women who are taking over the red rock trails of Sedona, Arizona.
Rediscover America recently sat down with Jennifer Wesselhoff with Visit Sedona to learn more about how the amazing local women are working to overcome the perception that mountain biking is just a man's sport.
Who is Leading the movement?
Amaryth Gass is one of the instructors and co-owners of the Sedona Mountain Bike Academy. They do a lot with school kids to teach them how to get on their bikes. She is really awesome.
Who is Hosting Clinics?
Joanna Yates, another big local female mountain biker from Over the Edge, is super cool. She is working with Amaryth to host really neat women's clinics and help empower women through mountain biking.
What do you love about mountain Biking?
When you're on your bike and you're not even going fast but you're overcoming an obstacle, it helps you get through obstacles in everyday life. These women are out there encouraging and empowering young kids and other women all the time, and that's just super cool.
What is your favorite mountain bike trail?
I am a real beginner mountain biker, so I have to stick with the easier trails. I usually head to Girdner Trail, which is a newer trail system in Sedona. Part of the reason it was developed was to provide a variety of easy to moderate trails, so it's a great spot for beginners to go.
What tips do you have for beginners?
It's hard for me to get out of my head. I'm so afraid I'm going to fall and hurt myself! But getting out of your head helps you relax and enjoy the ride. It's a lot of fun!
